Car exhausts: Explained
The exhaust system is an essential component of any car when reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere. Whether you need to replace or fit a new exhaust, our article explains what car exhausts are and the different types of exhaust systems available.
What is a car exhaust?
Traditionally, a car exhaust would channel the engine fumes away from the cabin, thus keeping you and your passengers safe. Over time, the technology has matured, meaning that the exhaust does more than pump out gases from the tailpipe.
The main functions of a car exhaust include:
- To direct fumes away from passengers.
- Reducing noise and gas emissions.
- Improving engine performance.
- Better fuel economy.
How hot does a car exhaust get?
Your car exhaust can reach high temperatures when it’s being used. This is because all parts in the exhaust system need to work together to remove fumes and control your vehicle's sound efficiently. The temperature of a standard car exhaust ranges between 200°C and 260°C. However, a high-performance exhaust's temperature can reach over 500°C
What are the different types of car exhausts available?
On your vehicle, you may want to change the existing exhaust and upgrade it to a high-performance one. But what types of car exhausts are on the market? Here are a few exhaust systems to consider buying:
- Stock exhaust – Usually, this type of exhaust comes as standard with your vehicle. It is designed to balance efficiency, noise reduction and performance.
- Cat-back exhaust – Typically, a cat-back exhaust replaces part of the exhaust pipe around the catalytic converter to the muffler. It increases the noise from the engine and improves airflow, which in turn will improve performance. A cat-back exhaust is an excellent choice if you want an extra bit of growl from your engine without sacrificing performance.
- Turbo-back exhaust – A turbo-back exhaust system replaces the entire stock exhaust, which includes the tailpipe and the turbocharger. The turbo-back system allows more gas to exit the turbocharger and improves horsepower and performance.
Do electric cars have an exhaust?
No, electric cars do not produce toxic gases, so they don’t need an exhaust. EVs such as the Polestar 3 and Tesla Model S have a tailpipe attached to the vehicle’s rear, but these are an aesthetic feature. However, hybrid vehicles still need an exhaust because they have an internal combustion engine and an electric motor.
How long does it take to fit a new exhaust?
This is dependent on what part of the exhaust system needs replacing. The back box for instance can be replaced in less than an hour but if the whole system needs replacing it could take an entire day.
Knowing what the exhaust system does and what types are available enables you to find the one best suited to your vehicle. Is your current exhaust on its way out? Our article covers the signs that you need a new exhaust.
